An apartement building in an industrial town. In the 20 flats of the house there live blue collared workers, old people, alcoholics and single mothers with one or two children. The main story is about Paul, who isn´t integrated within the society. He lives in seclusion, but he made up his own society in the elevator of the appartement building.

< INTRO >
Fade-in from black to a streetscene: the weather is foggy, Paul is on a wide yard, at different cuts his position changes within the same camera angle, two or three times till he is in the back of the scene. After these cuts Paul disappears from the scene.

< wet laundry >
Camera angle towards an elevator door.  Elevator starts to move up.

3rd floor: Elevator door from the outside; Ms. Burns, with a basket of wet laundry waiting in front of the cabin.
Cabin arrives. She steps in.

Paul>  Good morning Ms Burn. (friendly)

Ms Burns>  BurnS. Burns, Paul. To the ground floor.

Paul pushes the <G> button for <ground floor>.

Ms Burns> What are you doin besides pushing buttons in the elevator? I bet your mom isn´t happy about you waisting your time.

Silence.
The Elevator arrives in the cellar. Paul opens the door.

Paul> My mom is an old mom.

Ms. Burns steps out.

< alcohol >
The door closes. The <G> button for <Ground Floor> lights up, the elevator cabin moves up and the doors open. On ground floor Morty  falls absolutely drunk towards Paul. Mortys trousers are wet and dirty like he kneed in the shit of 1000 soy fed cows.

Morty> (caughing) You old fucker, give me a chance with your mother.

Paul pushes <3>, elevator moves up.

Morty> You‘re too hard on me Paul!
Paul> (like to a child) My mom is an old mom.
Morty> You Fucker.

Morty> What’s up with the young Pussy from the 4th?
Paul> (smiling) She makes me horny, when I see her.
Morty>  Horny, yes Paul horny.

The elevator arrives in the 3rd Floor. Paul drags Morty out of the elevator and lays him on the wall of the corridor. The elevator doors shut.
The elevator leaves for ground floor.
Paul (shocked) jumps down the stairs in order to catch the cabin on ground floor.

< pizza >
Paul reaches the elevator door with luck. A boy from Frankies Pizza Service enters the cabin.

Paul> (breathless) Which floor?

The delivery boy pushes <2>. The elevator moves up.

Delboy> (wrinkling up his nose) What a smell!

Silence.
Paul tries to open the door for the delivery boy, but he does himself.

< cigarettes >
The delivery boy leaves the cabin, a lean woman steps in. Pauls face brightens up.
Paul> (relaxed and amorous)Hi Eve.
Eve> Those assholes turned off the gas. No soup for the kids.

Eve lights a cigarette. Paul pushes <G>. Eve offers Paul a cigarette.

Eve> Want one?
Paul> Please!

Paul steps forward and takes a cigarette, Eve lights it. It takes Paul a bit longer to get the cigarette burning. Paul puffs on it. Eve inhales with pleasure. Paul tries, too. As smoke streams into his lungs – he coughs hard. Eve blows out the smoke leisurely. The cabin arrives on the ground floor.

Eve> See ya.

Paul coughs. He follows Eve to the stairs exiting the building.
Eve glances back at Paul, then leaves the building. Paul lookes at her until she disappeares at a corner. The elevator moves up. Paul stays in front of the building, sitting on the stairs, smoking his cigarette.

< daydream >
Paul dreams that he and Eve have a luxurious breakfast. A TV-Set is  running without images (hissing).
Camera moves round the couple. They are chatting and laughing. No original sound.
Serious, but happy classic music.

BUT MEANWHILE:
2nd floor: Delivery boy pushes the elevator button. Elevator moves up. Suddenly a strange noise – the cabin gets stuck in the shaft.
He takes the stairs.
Ground floor: Delivery boy passes Paul dreaming on the stairs.

<broken elevator>
Paul awakes from his daydream.
Paul stubs out his cigarrette at the edge of a step and turns back into the apartment house. He recognizes that the elevator is broken, he rushes up the stairs.

< „dead“ man >
3rd floor: Paul sees Morty who is still lying in the corridor. Paul feels responsible for Morty and drags him towards the elevator doors.
Yet at the same time he remembers the stuck cabin, drops Morty and runs to his own flat on the 5th floor. Paul stops before the door of the flat.
He takes breath.

< Paul‘s flat >
Paul enters flat and suddenly sees drunk Morty tearing up Pauls beloved newspaper collection standing in the middle of Paul´s living room.
Paul tries to collect all the newspapers that Morty has not destroyed.
Paul is extremely confused. He turns his back on Morty in order to get his newspapers away from him.
Suddenly Paul is shocked by something.

< TV-Set >
On the screen a video flickers up.
In this video there is Pauls flat where you can see the same camera angle as before: There is the hissing TV-Set but no Morty.
The rest of the story is shown on the TV-Set lying on the pavement.

< own flat >
Camera angle through the door of the flat into the living room. Paul is running out of the flat with a massive wrench towards the camera.

< elevator >
Camera angle towards a door of the elevator, like in the beginning of the film.
A loud noise in the elevator cabin. Pause. Cabin starts to move down.
A noise like a crack of a whip. The cabin races down the shaft.

< cellar >
Behind the elevator door in the cellar the light flickers up shortly.
A loud crash.

< farm >
Eve is standing in the front of a paddock running her fingers through
a pony´s mane exaggerated tenderly. Camera panning to the sky.

< city >
Camera panning from the sky down to the city standing upside down.
